CBers and their QSL card printers had no qualms about borrowing well known characters for their QSL card pictures & handles. What could be the harm in printing a couple hundred for friends!? CBers already had the FCC to worry about--copyright was the least of their worries! Usually they give their own creative rendition of the image. Cartoon characters are the most common, but radio folks would grab hold of any image that suited their fancy! Characters with 3 or more get their own page.
